AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — A 22-year-old woman fatally stabbed her two young children in a convenience store bathroom Thursday, police said.
A worker at Food Mart told police she saw Jeanette Michelle Hawes enter the restroom Thursday afternoon with the two children, a boy and girl, and then heard a scream, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said. The worker called 911, and when deputies arrived they forced the door open and found Hawes on the floor, holding a steak knife and covered in the children’s blood, Strength said.
Jordon Hawes, 1, and Shakayla Hawes, 3, were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Both died of stab wounds to the chest, Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said.
Hawes was charged with two counts of murder and with possession of a knife during the commission of a crime. She was being held at the Richmond County jail.

A 14-year-old Orthodox Jewish boy was jumped from behind while walking home in Lakewood this weekend, according to police, who labeled the attack a bias crime.
The teenager was punched and kicked by about five or six “African-American men or youth,” who uttered several words, including “Jew,” just before the attack at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Ocean County township, police Sgt. Edward Rupp said.
The attack happened on Spruce Street off Route 9, and the victim was able to make it home afterward, Rupp said. The child was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises and released, police said.
“We’re investigating it as a bias- related incident,” Rupp said.
The attack was the third violent incident to rock Lakewood re cently, following a riot that forced the high school into a lockdown a week ago, and a baseball bat at tack on a rabbi last month. Community leaders said they worried Saturday’s attack signaled increasing unrest in a diverse town that has had occasional friction.

An 85-pound German shepherd, Congo, has become the unlikely face of the immigration debate in upscale Princeton, N.J., after a judge ordered the dog to be put down for attacking an illegal immigrant last summer.
Thousands of people have flooded the Internet and even petitioned the governor to ask that Congo be spared for his attack on Honduran landscaper Giovanni Rivera, who was injured seriously in June and later awarded $250,000 in insurance money.
And while New Jersey Gov. John Corzine has denied calls for a pardon, some town residents are upset the illegal immigrant was allowed to collect monetary compensation for his injuries.
“Too bad Congo doesn’t work on the border patrol,” one resident wrote online. “Maybe there would be less illegals entering our country.”
