A Spartanburg woman who police said tried to frame a local contractor by having someone paint “KKK” and racial slurs on her front door was arrested Monday on charges including conspiracy.
Police said Robin Rankins-White, 53, of 209 Carlton Drive and three accomplices made up stories of racial vandalism and phone harassment and blamed the contractor, who recently performed renovations on a house she owned in Hampton Heights. Spartanburg Public Safety Director Tony Fisher said Rankins-White, who is black, apparently thought no one would wise up to her scheme, which unraveled after investigators traced “harassing” phone calls back to the house under renovation and her cell phone.
Rankins-White wanted to obtain money from the contractor, who is white, or have him arrested, Fisher said.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A pregnant Ohio attorney who admitted that she fabricated her kidnapping left her family behind because she “experienced a meltdown,” her husband said Tuesday.She never was abducted last week outside a the city’s juvenile court building or forced into a vehicle, said police Capt. Ray Carroll. Instead, she drove by herself to the Atlanta area, where she was found three days later outside an amusement park, investigators said. Karyn McConnell Hancock, 35, a former city councilwoman, had been having psychological issues for several years, her husband said Tuesday. “She experienced a meltdown and attempted to handle those matters without the assistance of professional help,” said Lawrence Hancock. “Karyn elected to leave everything because she felt that she was unable to continue.” Police said at a news conference Tuesday that she recanted the story Monday after meeting with investigators for about eight hours. Hancock will likely be charged with making a false police report, said Police Chief Mike Navarre.

A new study is providing insights into the genetics of homosexuality — at least in fruit flies.
Researchers have discovered a gene involved in homosexual behavior in the tiny flies. They also found a way to turn homosexuality on and off with drugs.
Humans have a similar gene. But it’s unclear what effect, if any, the gene has on homosexual behavior in people, said biologist David Featherstone of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Featherstone and colleagues described their findings in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
After a century of study on fruit flies, researchers have accumulated a vast storehouse of genetic knowledge. UIC researchers were using fruit flies to study muscular dystrophy when they discovered a gene they call “gender blind,” or GB.
