TEL AVIV, Israel - Sitting on a thin mattress in an underground bomb shelter that reeked of urine, Tasfa Mara said he’s happy where he is. The 24-year-old Eritrean escaped forced conscription, beatings and a treacherous trek across three countries before reaching his promised land.
“Only Israel safe,” he said in patchy English, his hands and feet heavily bandaged from lacerations he suffered on the barbed-wire barricade between Egypt and Israel when crossing last week. “All African countries the same.”
Mara may not have a safe haven much longer. This week Israel plans to begin deporting thousands of African migrants who have slipped in through the porous southern border with Egypt. It remains unclear how the expulsions will be carried out and where Israel will send them.
Founded six decades ago in the wake of the Nazi genocide, Israel finds itself torn between a sense of duty to help people fleeing persecution and fears of an onslaught of illegal immigrants. The result has been a confused policy.

The terrorist network Al-Qaeda has given orders for the assassination of MP Geert Wilders (pictured right), newspaper De Telegraaf reports. The Party for Freedom (PVV) leader must be ’slaughtered’, the orders say, because he has insulted Islam and the prophet Mohammed.
The newspaper based its report on a recent message on a protected web forum of internet site al-ekhlaas.net, which De Telegraaf claims is affiliated with Al-Qaeda. The internet threat, which was posted on 28 January, was intercepted by the American research institute SITE Intelligence Group, the newspaper reports.
“In the name of Allah, we ask you to bring us the neck of this unbeliever who insults Islam and the Muslims and ridicules the prophet Mohammed,” the site says about Wilders, according to the newspaper.

An extensive new survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life details the religious affiliation of the American public and explores the shifts taking place in the U.S. religious landscape. Based on interviews with more than 35,000 Americans age 18 and older, the U.S. Religious Landscape Survey finds that religious affiliation in the U.S. is both very diverse and extremely fluid.More than one-quarter of American adults (28%) have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion - or no religion at all. If change in affiliation from one type of Protestantism to another is included, 44% of adults have either switched religious affiliation, moved from being unaffiliated with any religion to being affiliated with a particular faith, or dropped any connection to a specific religious tradition altogether.
The survey finds that the number of people who say they are unaffiliated with any particular faith today (16.1%) is more than double the number who say they were not affiliated with any particular religion as children. Among Americans ages 18-29, one-in-four say they are not currently affiliated with any particular religion.

A student has admitted to his role in the etching of swastikas inside and outside of a Jewish student’s off-campus apartment Friday night.
In a written statement to The Quindecim, Julian Rees ‘09 said he carved a swastika on Shira Zemel ’09’s bathroom wall. (His complete statement follows this story.)
Rees, who is Jewish, said that he did not sketch three other swastikas found outside of Zemel’s apartment. Other swastikas were found outside of her apartment door and down the hall near elevators (see picture on right).
So far, no one has taken responsibility for those three swastikas, which were apparently etched with a key. The swastika Rees carved in the bathroom was done with a pocketknife.
“…Although I am currently the sole suspect for all acts in this investigation, there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that I am not responsible for the markings in the hallway…” Rees said in an e-mail.

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu , Hawaii , to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel , Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas .
Obama’s parents met at the University of Hawaii . When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya . His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia . When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia . Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta . He also spent two years in a Catholic school. Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is quick to point out that, ‘He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school.’
Obama’s political handlers are attempting to make it appear that Obama’s introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son’s education.

Barack Obama’s Radical Marxist and Black Liberation Theology Church
Presidential hopeful Barack Obama belongs to the United Church of Christ, which was the first to ordain an openly gay minister and to call for equal marriage rights for all people, regardless of gender. The UCC prides itself as being “out front” on social justice issues, battling civil rights, women’s rights and gay rights ahead of the mainstream. One Sunday hymnal equally celebrates male and female images of God.
And earlier this month, the UCC took a stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith rebuked as “unfair and one-sided.”
Obama’s faith, church and pastor have all come under scrutiny since he announced his bid for president.

Don’t count on your typical teenager to nod knowingly the next time you drop a reference to any of these. A study out today finds that about half of 17-year-olds can’t identify the books or historical events associated with them.
Twenty-five years after the federal report A Nation at Risk challenged U.S. public schools to raise the quality of education, the study finds high schoolers still lack important historical and cultural underpinnings of “a complete education.” And, its authors fear, the nation’s current focus on improving basic reading and math skills in elementary school might only make matters worse, giving short shrift to the humanities ? even if children can read and do math.
“If you think it matters whether or not kids have common historical touchstones and whether, at some level, we feel like members of a common culture, then familiarity with this knowledge matters a lot,” says American Enterprise Institute researcher Rick Hess, who wrote the study.

The United Nations warned yesterday that it no longer has enough money to keep global malnutrition at bay this year in the face of a dramatic upward surge in world commodity prices, which have created a “new face of hunger”.
“We will have a problem in coming months,” said Josette Sheeran, the head of the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP). “We will have a significant gap if commodity prices remain this high, and we will need an extra half billion dollars just to meet existing assessed needs.”
With voluntary contributions from the world’s wealthy nations, the WFP feeds 73 million people in 78 countries, less than a 10th of the total number of the world’s undernourished. Its agreed budget for 2008 was $2.9bn (£1.5bn). But with annual food price increases around the world of up to 40% and dramatic hikes in fuel costs, that budget is no longer enough even to maintain current food deliveries.
The shortfall is all the more worrying as it comes at a time when populations, many in urban areas, who had thought themselves secure in their food supply are now unable to afford basic foodstuffs. Afghanistan has recently added an extra 2.5 million people to the number it says are at risk of malnutrition.

Eurostat report negative European Birth Rate while Immigration and Birth Rate from Non-Europeans is sharply increasing.

Natural population growth is slowing year on year across the 25-member European Union, according to new data which shows immigration to be holding off the demographic decline of the “Old Continent”.
Except for France, all of Europe’s heavyweights now depend on immigration to keep their populations stable or growing and are taking steps to boost their birth rates — including the symbolic choice of a mother of seven to be Germany’s new minister for families.
Most of the increase was due to net migration, more than half of it to Italy and Spain, although Eurostat noted that regularisation programmes for immigrants in both countries had inflated the figures.
But while Eurostat’s projections show the bloc’s population inching up to around 470 million over the next 15 years — it then starts to fall, possibly as low as 450 million by 2050.
Across the EU, natural population growth — births minus deaths — is 5 238.9 million minus 4 816.4 million
In Germany, Europe’s largest country with 82.5 million inhabitants, deaths have exceeded births since 1991 — although immigration has so far kept the population growing.

Britain is experiencing the worst “brain drain” of any country as highly qualified professionals settle abroad, an authoritative international study showed yesterday.
Record numbers of Britons are leaving—many of them doctors, teachers and engineers—in the biggest exodus for almost 50 years.
Over a quarter of qualified professionals who have moved abroad had health or education qualifications
There are now 3.247 million British-born people living abroad, of whom more than 1.1 million are highly-skilled university graduates, say the researchers.
More than three quarters of these professionals have settled abroad for more than 10 years, according to the study by the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
No other nation is losing so many qualified people, it points out. Britain has now lost more than one in 10 of its most skilled citizens, while overall only Mexico has had more people emigrate.

Olmert orders authorities to remove thousands of African asylum seekers by weekend
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday directed Israeli authorities to deport thousands of African asylum seekers who have sneaked into Israel though the Egyptian border and whose lives would not be endangered if sent home, his office said.
The statement said the Africans should be expelled from Israel by the end of the week.
Asylum seekers have been infiltrating in larger numbers over the past year. More than 7,000 — mostly from Africa — have entered the country illegally through its border with Egypt, including more than 2,000 this year alone, said Michael Bavly, a representative in Israel of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
Their route has been treacherous. On Sunday, Egyptian forces shot and killed an African woman who was trying to cross the border into Israel, a medical official said.
Five other Africans — two women and three men from Sudan, Eritrea and Ivory Coast — have been shot dead by Egyptian troops in separate incidents near the Egypt-Israel border since late January. They were believed to have paid hundreds of dollars to human traffickers to help them cross into Israel.

Barack Obama’s campaign accused Hillary Clinton’s team Monday of circulating a photo of the Illinois senator donning traditional attire – clothing worn by area Muslims – as a goodwill gesture during an overseas trip.
In a statement, the Clinton campaign called the charge “an obvious and transparent attempt to distract” voters from serious issues – but did not issue a denial.
The picture, which appeared on the Drudge Report this morning, was attributed to sources within the Clinton campaign – although the Web site did not reveal how many, or who, might have received the photo.
In a statement, Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, said Clinton’s campaign was engaged in “shameful, offensive fear-mongering,” though he did not point to any proof beyond the original item that appeared on Matt Drudge’s blog.
“This is part of a disturbing pattern that led her county chairs to resign in Iowa, her campaign chairman to resign in New Hampshire,” said Plouffe. “and it’s exactly the kind of divisive politics that turns away Americans of all parties and diminishes respect for America in the world.”
