WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand’s Asian population is growing faster than any other ethnic group and will outnumber indigenous Maori by 2026, government figures released Wednesday showed.

The findings drew the ire of an anti-immigrant party that contends the door should be shut on Asian immigrants, claiming they do not integrate into mainstream society.

“If we continue this open door policy there is real danger we will be inundated with people who have no intention of integrating into our society. The greater the number, the greater the risk,” New Zealand First Party deputy leader Peter Brown said.

Ethnic Affairs Minister Chris Carter condemned the comments.

“I think he’s absolutely being racist,” Carter said. “He shouldn’t be condemning people because of their race or culture.”

The chief executive of the country’s Employers and Manufacturers Association, Alasdair Thompson, said Brown’s comments were “racial stereotyping of the worst sort.”

TORONTO — Four decades after Hollywood’s first interracial kiss in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” shocked mainstream America, Canada’s multicultural society is increasingly showing signs that love is colour blind.

The latest census figures released Wednesday by Statistics Canada show that, on this side of the border, mixed unions are forming at unprecedented rates.

There were 289,420 mixed-race couples, married and common law, in 2006 - one third more than in 2001, the last time the data was collected.

Yet there was a time in North America’s not-so distant past that marrying someone of a different race wasn’t just taboo, it could land someone behind bars.

Before a 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision ruled it unconstitutional, 16 states still had laws banning interracial marriage.

More ‘fake’ marriages foiled: The number of pro-forma marriages rejected by Norwegian officials last year rose sharply, to 150 cases from 33 countries worldwide.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) says it has heightened focus on the problem of marriages arranged mainly for the purpose of gaining the rights to live and work in Norway.

Applications to bring new spouses into Norway from foreign lands as part of a “family reunification” have been under greater scrutiny since a 2006 directive issued by the Labour Ministry.

The nationalities include applicants from Turkey, Morrocco, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam, among others.

Precises statistics are not available for 2006, while just 57 applicants were rejected in 2005.

Norwegian Ambassador to Morrocco Arne Aasheim told newspaper Aftenposten that applications often involve couples who cannot communicate in the same language or cases in which the age difference is extremely high. Marriages that have taken place perfunctorily or without the pair having met before the wedding are also red flags.

The new year faced young women living in Oslo with a new situation. During New Year’s Eve several brutal rapes took place in the Norwegian capital. The media hardly mentioned the fact that all the rapes were conducted by aliens of African descent. In the two months to follow it became clear that these rapes were just the start of a new trend. In the two last months, Arabs and aliens from Africa has gone on a raping-spree in Oslo. Every women between 12 and 40 seems to be a target for these rapists and the incidents, though mainly in the inner city, has been taking place in the suburbs as well. Even children are targeted. A 14 year old girl was brutally raped by two men of alien origin on the grounds of her school at Oppsal (an Oslo suburb) in January.

Home invasion

Home invasions has also taken place. This is a new phenomenon in Norway. Within hours two women were raped in their own apartments, one after the perpetrators had forced their way in as the woman was entering her flat, the other happened under unclear circumstances. Though common in the US, Norwegian women has not had to face this threat until now, and it is not yet clear what reactions to expect from the female population. Some tendencies can be observed, and even hard-core liberal newspapers print expressions by their female writers about the fear of African men and how this can be justified, even though it feels slightly racist.

The number of rape charges per capita in Malmö is 5 to 6 times that of Copenhagen, Denmark. Copenhagen is a larger city, but the percentage of immigrants is much lower. And it’s not just the rape statistics that reveal a scary increase in Malmö or Sweden. Virtually every kind of violent crime is on the rise. Robberies have increased with 50 % in Malmö only during the fall of 2004. Threats against witnesses in Swedish court cases have quadrupled between 2000 and 2003. During the past few decades, massive immigration has changed the face of Sweden’s major cities, as well as challenged the viability of the welfare state. In 1970 Sweden had the fourth highest GDP per capita among developed countries with income about 6% above the OECD average. By 1997 it was at fifteenth place with an average GDP per capita 14% below average. Malmö has a heavy concentration of Muslim immigrants in particular. According to some estimates, it will be a Muslim majority city in no more then 10 years. Crime is rampant in the growing ghettos:

The number of immigrants in Oslo has increased by 40 percent over the past five years, and the capital is an increasingly popular destination for Norway’s new residents.

Seven suburban city districts have a population segment of over 20 percent of people who come from a non-Western background according to city statistics, and it is this group that is growing most quickly in the capital, newspaper Dagsavisen reports.The figures are from the latest edition of Oslo Speilet (=The Oslo Mirror), a journal based on city statistics and analysis.

There are now 101,649 non-Western immigrants living in Oslo, which is 18.9 percent of the capital’s total population. The non-Western immigrants are not evenly distributed across the city.

“At the end of the 1990s non-Western immigrants began to sell their small one and two-room apartments in downtown Oslo and buy three and four-room apartments in the suburbs instead,” special adviser Paul Håvard Kvangraven at the City’s Department of Development and Human Resources told Dagsavisen.

Schools are having to provide moral guidance to pupils which should be given by their parents at home, according to a senior headteachers’ leader.

Pupils lack realistic aspirations, are too heavily influenced by what they see as the “easy” lives of celebrities, and some have lost the art of conversation because they rarely sit down for a meal with their parents, John Dunford, the general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told its annual conference in Brighton yesterday.

The problems were worst among working-class families, he said. “For some children, schools have had to take the place of the institutions that used to set the boundaries of acceptable behaviour - that was, fundamentally, the family and the church,” Dunford said.

“Never have the values of school been more important in children’s lives. Never has the job of school leaders in articulating those values, day by day, week by week, been so important. For many children, school and its values, its clear boundaries and moral framework, are the only solid bedrock in their lives.”
