Egypt to host Obama outreach to Muslims
Barack Obama is to directly address Muslims from Egypt, a country considered by the most in the region as Israel’s main accomplice against the Palestinians.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Friday said the President’s speech would be delivered in Egypt in early June.
“On June 4, the president will give a speech in Egypt. The speech will be about America’s relations with the Muslim world,” Gibbs said without disclosing the exact venue of the speech.
The very location of Obama’s speech may undermine the Democrats new push for peace in the Middle East.
As the first Arab and Muslim country to recognize Israel three decades ago, Egypt is mainly considered as Israel’s right hand man against the Palestinians.
Egypt is also mentioned in the US State Department’s annual report as a country with “significant restrictions on the political process and freedom of expression.”
Egypt’s longest-serving ruler since Muhammad Ali in the early 19th century, President Hosni Mubarak, is been widely uncontested as his strongest challenger the Muslim Brotherhood is officially banned.
“It is a country that in many ways represents the heart of the Arab world,” Gibbs said explaining why Obama chose Egypt as the location of his address to the Muslim world.
Popular Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah has slammed Egypt for giving its “full cooperation and intelligence to Israel and the US in order to force others into submission.”
