Norway offers tax payers money as “financial aid” for maintaining Auschwitz
Norway said this week it would donate two million kroner (221,000 euros, 312,000 dollars) to the upkeep of the memorial museum at the Nazi German Auschwitz-Birkenau work camp in Poland.
“Auschwitz-Birkenau is perhaps the most important museum in Europe. This site tells a story that we are not allowed to forget,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement.
“It is up to all of us to help ensure that this memorial over the extermination of Jews in Europe does not fall into disrepair, so that future generations can also learn about the darkest chapter in European history and thereby help make sure that it never happens again,” he said.
Poland has proposed the creation of an international fund of 120 million euros for the maintenance of the camp, where some 1.1 million people were supposedly killed, including a million Jews from different countries, from 1940 to 1945.
