A Muslim is to go on trial in a British legal first, accused of encouraging two boys to flog themselves during an Islamic ceremony to he held in Manchester.

Syed Mustafa Zaidi, 44, is accused of encouraging the boys, aged 15 and 13, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to beat themselves during a traditional Ashura ceremony at a community centre in Levenshulme, Manchester, on January 19.

The practice is common among Shia Muslims but allowing children to harm themselves is contrary to British law.

Ashura involves practitioners flagellating themselves using a Zanjeer Zani, an implement which has a wooden handle with chains and blades attached.

The Ashura ceremony takes place during the Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and a central figure in the Shia faith.

Zaidi, of Station Road, Eccles, Salford, denies two counts of child cruelty. Doubtless his defence will be that it is his religion.

It’s hard to believe that we enlightened, practical, eyes-wide-open Americans are living in a fable, a virtual fairy tale but more and more evidence is making the case that we are.

The “fairy tale” I refer to is actually a witty satire written by the brilliant author/politician Jonathan Swift in 1726. Because it was such an entertaining piece, it became a famous children’s story; but that was not the original intention of the author. Swift himself said “The chief end I propose to myself in all my labors is, to vex the world rather than divert it.”

That is, he wanted to focus his society on its folly. And that he did, eloquently. But little could he have imagined how accurately he would picture our society in America today. It’s startling. It’s disheartening. And it’s threatening to our very survival.

Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has accused Georgia of provoking the recent hostilities with Russia by sending troops into South Ossetia and described President Mikheil Saakashvili as a “gambler.”

In an interview with German newsmagazine Der Spiegel that was published Saturday, Aug. 16, Schroeder said that the Georgian invasion of South Ossetia was “the moment that initiated the current hostilities.”

He declined to comment on whether Russia’s response was disproportionate, saying that military conflicts developed their own dynamic.

Schroeder’s successor, Chancellor Angela Merkel, Friday described the Russian reaction as “disproportionate in some aspects.”

Even Americans are saying, “Thank you Russia for standing up to the crackpots in control of our government.” As much as the corporate elitist media in the west blathers and carries on with lies and obfuscation about the events in Georgia and South Ossetia, as much as they try to cover up the facts and the truth and the war crimes committed by their puppet state, Georgia, they have failed to convince the world community.

The truth about Ossetia:

Their all too numerous outlets are pummeling the world community with distortions, trying to shove the castor oil of the empire down our collective throats, but the gag reflex is well intact and their lies remain unpalatable. The empire is used to and expects everyone to jump when told to and to believe what they hear and read. They don’t expect and can’t understand when someone or some country tells them to back off with their egotistical, haughty, self important orders or pronouncements. But their “orders” and pronouncements have become irrelevant. We are again living in a multicolor world.

During the night of August 7, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Georgia’s president Saakashvili ordered an all-out military attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia.

The aerial bombardments and ground attacks were largely directed against civilian targets including residential areas, hospitals and the university. The provincial capital Tskhinvali was destroyed. The attacks resulted in some 1500 civilian deaths, according to both Russian and Western sources.  “The air and artillery bombardment left the provincial capital without water, food, electricity and gas. Horrified civilians crawled out of the basements into the streets as fighting eased, looking for supplies.” (AP, August 9, 2008). According to reports, some 34,000 people from South Ossetia have fled to Russia. (Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake City, August 10, 2008)

The importance and timing of this military operation must be carefully analyzed. It has far-reaching implications.

Georgia is an outpost of US and NATO forces, on the immediate border of the Russian Federation and within proximity of the Middle East Central Asian war theater. South Ossetia is also at the crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes.

A surprise military offensive by Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia reportedly killed hundreds of people Friday, triggering a ferocious counterattack from Russia that threatened to plunge the region into full-scale war.

Moscow, which has close ties to South Ossetia, sent a column of tanks rolling into South Ossetia and reportedly attacked two Georgian air bases as it moved to assert itself as the dominant regional power.

As night fell, there were wildly conflicting claims as to who held the battlefield advantage.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said “Georgian military forces completely control all the territory of South Ossetia” except for a northern section adjacent to Russia. But Russian news agencies cited a Russian military official as saying heavy fighting was under way on the outskirts of the regional capital.

Witnesses said the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, was devastated.

Israeli mass media published several articles August 10 dedicated to the war in South Ossetia. Newspapers paid special attention to arms shipments to Georgia, which Israel had made in the past. A former defense ministry official said that the Georgian army had no chances in the opposition to the Russian army.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of encouraging Georgia to interventions and ethnic cleansings in South Ossetia. Russia also claimed that Ukraine had armed Georgia to the teeth. Georgia’s ground forces possess weapons, ammunition, unmanned aircraft, night vision goggles and other equipment made in Israel.

Israel’s Defense Ministry recommended to cease arms shipments to Georgia after the start of military actions in South Ossetia, not to provoke Russia.

Battles in South Ossetia continued throughout the night. Russian sources said that about 2,000 people had been killed in South Ossetia.

“We must immediately call a meeting of the NATO Council to estimate Georgia’s security and consider the measures, which NATO may take to stabilize the highly dangerous situation,” John McCain said.

“The international community needs to deploy independent and neutral peacemaking forces in South Ossetia. Russia must immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw troops from the sovereign territory of Georgia,” McCain believes.

Ariel Cohen, a well-known US specialist on the Soviet Union, a Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, stated that Russia was planning the incursion for months and that it was intended to demonstrate its hegemony over Eastern Europe, push Mr. Saakashvili from power in Georgia and not to let Georgia become a NATO member.

TWO taxi drivers may be executed after they were convicted of raping, robbing and murdering an Australian tourist within hours of her arrival in India four years ago.

Dawn Griggs, a 59-year-old writer and educator from Byron Bay, landed at Delhi airport in March 2004 to join a meditation course. She arranged for a prepaid taxi to drive her from the airport to a suburban ashram.

Instead, she was taken to a deserted field near the airport and murdered by the drivers, Jyotish Prasad and Ashish Kumar. It is common for taxi drivers in India to have an associate in the front seat with them while they are working. An autopsy found Ms Griggs had been gagged, strangled and stabbed.

Prasad, 28, was arrested soon after the body was found and Kumar, 31, was detained four days later. Both have been in jail since. They were initially charged with murder and robbery. The charge of rape was added after further medical evidence was received.

THE bleak economic situation is the main culprit behind the high company liquidation numbers recorded by Statistics SA in June.

According to Stats S A , the total number of liquidations recorded for June increased by 28.7 percent from 181 to 233 when compared with June 2007.

The most liquidations in the period between January to June were in the financing, insurance, real estate business services with 500 voluntary closures and 42 compulsory liquidations. The wholesale and retail trade, catering and accommodation sectors came in a close second with 444 voluntary liquidations and 55 compulsory liquidations.

Friedhelm Busse former SS soldier, and political activist died at age 79 of cancer. Incredibly:  The district attorney’s office has ordered the grave of the deceased to be opened to make sure there is no Nazi flag inside!  Thomas “Steiner” Wulff had spread the flag on Saturday on the coffin dropped in the grave.  Now he faces criminal charges.

In addition it was the specific wish of the deceased to be buried with such a flag.  As if it was not enough that the German government jailed this war hero they were “nice enough” to send some armed guards to monitor his hospital room, to make sure he did not leave, but they did send his family a bill for the service!

Friedhelm penance had died at the past Tuesday at the age of 79 years.  At the age of 16 years it fought in the SS against the advancing allies.  It was later in different national parties where he became active, among other things a chairperson for the later forbidden FAP.  approximately 100 nationalists came to the funeral on Saturday.  Eleven of them subsequently were arrested, under that also Thomas “Steiner” Wulff, because of the spread flag.
