A Muslim is to go on trial in a British legal first, accused of encouraging two boys to flog themselves during an Islamic ceremony to he held in Manchester.

Syed Mustafa Zaidi, 44, is accused of encouraging the boys, aged 15 and 13, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to beat themselves during a traditional Ashura ceremony at a community centre in Levenshulme, Manchester, on January 19.

The practice is common among Shia Muslims but allowing children to harm themselves is contrary to British law.

Ashura involves practitioners flagellating themselves using a Zanjeer Zani, an implement which has a wooden handle with chains and blades attached.

The Ashura ceremony takes place during the Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and a central figure in the Shia faith.

Zaidi, of Station Road, Eccles, Salford, denies two counts of child cruelty. Doubtless his defence will be that it is his religion.

The well-known Egyptian Islamic TV evangelist ‘Amr Khaled, has predicted that Muslims will be a majority in Europe within 20 years.

Khaled made the prediction during an interview which was aired on Dream 2 TV. To view this clip, click here.

“The Muslims keep having children, while the Europeans do not - this means that within 20 years, the Muslims will be a majority,” he said.

Interviewer: “How do you view the Islamic scene in Europe?”

Amr Khaled: “The most important thing is that there are 25-30 million Muslims in Europe. This figure has many implications.”

The Nicis Institute for Urban Research suggests in a study titled “Economic opportunities of ethnic diversity” that the major cities should transform the immigrant neighborhoods into “Little Turkey” with large shopping streets and many cultural manifestations, similar to the American Little Italy or Chinatown.

According to Nicis, putting together foreign populations is good for their economic development.  And neighborhoods such as Little Turkey or Little Morocco could be an attraction for internal and external tourism.

Nicis manager Wim Hafkamp thinks that there are already two neighborhoods in Amsterdam, the Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht, which could be considered for this approach, and he advises to give those neighborhoods their own ‘face’.

He says that immigrant entrepreneurs in such strongholds are encouraged to undertake enterprises, since they’re assured of customers, and that leads to a snow ball effect.

Officials in Brussels are working on plans to ensure that the European Treaty is still implemented elsewhere if Ireland votes against it in the referendum.

Although measures such as creating an EU president, “foreign minister” and European diplomatic service may be delayed, they are still expected to be introduced.

One diplomat said a “bridging mechanism” was being discussed. If Ireland rejects the treaty, it may simply be removed from the list of signatories and will not be legally obliged to abide by it.

By late 2009 or early 2010, when Croatia joins the EU, an amending “Accession Treaty” will be signed by all members including Dublin.

Incorporated into it would be a series of protocol texts giving paper “opt-outs” on controversial Irish EU issues, such as taxation powers or greater military co-operation.

A court in French-Flanders annulled a marriage since the bride turned out not to be a virgin, report French newspaper Libération. The judges came to the conclusion that the bridegroom was deceived concerning an ‘essential characteristic’ of the bride, who had assured him before the wedding that she was still virgin.

The judges therefore decided to apply a law which is seldom used.

Both bride and groom are young French Muslims. “Completely not extremists,” according to the groom’s lawyer. The family of the bride had presented her as “single and chaste”. The fraud was revealed when on the wedding night the groom could not show blood spots on the sheets to the feasting family. The groom’s father brought the bride back to her parents.

The bride confessed that she had had sex before, and that she had concealed that fact since she was sure her boyfriend wouldn’t marry her if she wasn’t a virgin.

Jannes Mulder, former internist and oncologist, writing in the Dutch medical journal Medisch Contact, says that girls are still being circumcises, even though the procedure is banned.

The Dutch Council for Public Health estimates that at least 50 girls are circumcised every year, mostly in the Somali community.

In his article, ‘A drop of blood’, Mulder suggests that since banning the procedure doesn’t work, a symbolic form of the practice - pricking the clitorial hood - should be allowed. This would prevent more serious forms of female genital mutilation, and allow medical oversight of the procedure.

His idea was immediately dismissed by Monica Van Berkum, head of Pharos, an information center about preventing and dealing with female circumcision. Van Berkum says that no compromise should be made regarding the integrity of a girl’s body. Even a little prick give a completely wrong message, as if that’s needed to make a girl fit.

Prison officers at one of Britain’s maximum security jails are losing control to Muslim gangs, according to a confidential report obtained by The Observer. An internal review of Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire warns that staff believe a ’serious incident is imminent’ as several wings become dominated by Muslim prisoners.

The report, written by the Prison Service’s Directorate of High Security, says there is an ‘ongoing theme of fear and instability’ among staff at Whitemoor, where just under a third of the 500 prisoners are Muslim.

It claims: ‘There was much talk around the establishment about “the Muslims”. Some staff perceived the situation at Whitemoor had resulted in Muslim prisoners becoming more of a gang than a religious group. The sheer numbers, coupled with a lack of awareness among staff, appeared to be engendering fear and handing control to the prisoners.’ The situation has become so acute that white prisoners are routinely warned about the Muslim gangs by staff on arrival.

Oslo police recently released its 2007 Rape Report. The report shows a marked increase in Somali rapists, generally on account of gang rapes. (Translated from Norwegian)

At least ten women were attacked and molested by a gang of Somali men at Sofienberg park in Oslo on Saturday evening.

Last year a record-high 161 rapes and 35 rape attempts were reported in Oslo. Over 70% of the rapists were non-Norwegian [ed. ethnically, a majority had Norwegian citizenship].

Lawyer Abid Raja visited a cafe in Grønland in Oslo for Norwegian broadcaster P4. There he met three young men (ages 26, 30 and 35), from Somalia and Senegal.

The men, who refused to have their names published, spoke with P4 about the rape and robbery wave hitting the city.

France will today take a significant step towards establishing Paris as a western centre for Islamic finance when plans to attract this fast-growing sector to the city are discussed in the country’s parliament.

The move is a part of the French capital’s wider aspirations to rival London as an international financial centre.

Christine Lagarde, France’s finance minister, has already introduced several measures to attract global funds since taking office last June.

“This government’s objective is to make France more competitive and one aspect of that is [attracting] Islamic finance,” said Anouar Hassane, a credit analyst for Moody’s, based in Paris. “We have to compete with the rest of Europe and the emerging economies.”

AN ALGERIAN man arrested after allegedly spraying a mixture of ‘urine, faeces and domestic products’ over food in two supermarkets last Friday was remanded in custody today to await committal to crown court.

Sahnoun Daifallah, 42, of Bibury road, White City, Gloucester, is also accused of two similar attacks on earlier dates in a bookshop and a pub in the Cotswolds.

Daifallah, who represented himself at Cheltenham Magistrate’s Court this morning, admitted being at the locations involved but denied being responsible for the spray attacks.

He indicated he would be pleading not guilty to four charges of contaminating food or books - two on May 14 at Cirencester and Birdlip, and two more at supermarkets in Quedgeley and Abbeydale, Gloucester, on May 16.
