Biologists have constructed a genetic map of Europe showing the degree of relatedness between its various populations.
All the populations are quite similar, but the differences are sufficient that it should be possible to devise a forensic test to tell which country in Europe an individual probably comes from, said Manfred Kayser, a geneticist at the Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands.
The map shows, at right, the location in Europe where each of the sampled populations live and, at left, the genetic relationship between these 23 populations. The map was constructed by Dr. Kayser, Dr. Oscar Lao and others, and appears in an article in Current Biology published online on August 7.
The genetic map of Europe bears a clear structural similarity to the geographic map. The major genetic differences are between populations of the north and south (the vertical axis of the map shows north-south differences, the horizontal axis those of east-west). The area assigned to each population reflects the amount of genetic variation in it.

One almost feels the need to apologize for not really being that interested in what Vladamir Putin is carrying out in Georgia, because when one is focused on the bigger picture, Mr. Putin being awakened to his heritage and crushing all foes with a brutal force, that is the arena of what is more fascinating in this game.
In America, the ruling elite of the Rockefeller groups, who are in a great part of the Ashkenaz convert peoples from the very region of the Caucasus now blowing up, have made the subject of heritage a subject verboten to use a German word.
It is in their interest to hide who they are as they play more powerful peoples against each other.
The heritage of peoples though are so very necessary in understanding what is going on in this as all of this is as old as the sons of Noah. Vladamir Putin, himself, can trace his lineage to Noah’s son, Japheth, the eldest.
Japheth had seven sons and of these was Meshech of the people of the Moscow region. Tubal who lived along the Black Sea. Magog who are the eastern Slavs and into what is termed Russia, and, the various people’s allied with the “Russians” in Persians, middle Asians and Indians.

The neo-Nazi party NPD now has representatives in every county council in the eastern German state of Saxony. In one town, the party even managed to win over a quarter of the vote.
Germany’s right-wing extremist National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) has long found some measure of success in the voting booths of eastern Germany. In Sunday municipal elections in the state of Saxony, the run of success continued.
With the state’s 2.9 million voters choosing new county and municipal councils, the neo-Nazi NPD pulled in some 5.1 percent of the vote across the state and looked set for representation in every county council in the state. In two counties, the NPD even came in ahead of the Social Democrats. In terms of total votes, the NPD managed to quadruple its total from 2004, moving from 41,000 votes to 160,000.
Despite the advances made by the NPD, however, the conservative Christian Democrats emerged as the victors of the weekend election, winning 39.5 percent of the vote. The Left Party, successors to the post-Communist PDS, managed 18.7 percent while support for the Social Democrats, came in at just 11.5 percent.

The entire business and political elite of Ireland ganged up to tell their countrymen that they should vote in favour of the Lisbon Treaty. Failure to comply would risk outraging the EU elite and integrationist maniacs who want to impose their undemocratic project on an entire continent. The implication was profoundly insulting: that if voters were to cause any trouble, Ireland would suffer somehow. By implication it is incapable of prospering as a nation which values its independence.
Irish voters, thank goodness, appear to have had other ideas and in raising two fingers to the latest stage of the federalist programme have cheered those who want a different kind of Europe - an accountable Europe of free nations.
Amusingly, this is extremely embarrassing for the leaders who tried to railroad the Lisbon treaty past Europe’s voters.
Their EU project is propelled by the myth that this process is inevitable and unstoppable. The opposite is the case because rapid economic and technological change means that, while we should trade and cooperate, individual nation states will need maximum maneuverability to compete.
Will EU leaders listen? Yes, for about 30 seconds before activating plan B in which they implement 90% of the provisions of the Treaty anyway. But at least the opposing forces have been given a rallying point and an electorate has spoken.
UPDATE: The rumour is that Gordon Brown has phoned Sarko to say he’ll press ahead with UK ratification regardless. Is there something in the water at Westminster? This David Davis kamikaze style of politics is catching and perhaps Brown wants to be the next to try it.

The new mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, a former fascist, has launched a campaign to promote Italian films at the expense of those featuring Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman and Leonardo DiCaprio, who are to be blacklisted.
American actors who flocked to Rome for its film festival will no longer be invited, on the orders of Alemanno, 50, of the National Alliance party, who last week became the first rightwinger to win the mayor’s job in 15 years.
Outside city hall, his followers greeted him with fascist salutes and shouts of “Duce! Duce!” – the title used by the dictator Benito Mussolini, who ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943.
Alemanno, a former minister of agriculture, has a colourful past. He was arrested in 1981 with four other neo-fascists for allegedly beating up a student with baseball bats, but no charges were pressed.
The following year he was incarcerated for eight months, accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Soviet embassy, but was eventually acquitted. He was also arrested in 1989, this time for trying to block the motorcade of President George H W Bush, and was again found not guilty.

Hitler was confident of winning World War II and planned to give Berlin a monumental makeover by 1950. A group in Berlin has collected records about his ‘Germania’ vision — and plans to lead tours through what’s left of the old construction site.
Hitler never liked Berlin. He saw it as a dirty, liberal-minded place and was disdainful of its leftist political leanings. But he had an idea for fixing it after World War II came to an end. His famous vision of Berlin for 1950 — planned in detail by his architect, Albert Speer — was a grand Fascist city called “Germania,” and a new Berlin exhibition looks at models and physical traces of it left behind by Hitler’s regime.
The exhibit, called “Myth Germania,” shows just how far from reality Hitler’s mind wandered when he dreamed about Germany’s future. One centerpiece is a scale model of the Volkshalle, a gargantuan domed auditorium that Speer imagined rising over the River Spree. The Volkshalle dome would have risen 290 meters (951 feet) into the air, higher than some New York skyscrapers. The exhibit’s model makes scale models of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag look like toys from a model train set.

The European Union’s competition watchdog has appoved the use of €99m (£76m) of French state aid for a consortium attempting to build an internet search engine to take on Google.A lack of funding has meant the project - which is Latin for “I seek” - is still in the concept stage, but will now be able to get up and running thanks to support from France, which has championed the scheme.
Following an “in-depth examination,” the European Commission decided that the Quaero project “brings positive externalities for the community as a whole.”
However, Quaero “is not spontaneously underpinned by the market owing to divergent interests within the consortium and to uncertainties regarding the project’s chances of success,” the EU’s executive arm said in a statement.
